Out and About – Places to Visit
Home Farm is situated at the south western end of the Black Isle and is an excellent centre for a holiday, with plenty of places to see and lots of things to do, not difficult with the Scottish highlands on your doorstep.
The Black Isle is neither an island nor black in colour! It is, in fact, a peninsula of about 23 miles in length, bounded to the north by the Cromarty Firth and to the south by the Moray and Beauly Firths. No one really knows why it is called the "Black" Isle, although various theories exist, the most plausible of which is that the soil is blackish in colour. Quiet roads and beaches can be found and many of our Guests make at least one visit to find the Bottlenose Dolphins which can be seen from the lighthouse at Rosemarkie, (Channory Point).
For those with a further interest in wildlife, Home Farms location between mountains and sea provides a varied habitat which attracts many different birds and animals. Eagles, ospreys, deer, pine martens, seals and the occasional otter can all be seen.
 Guests with an historical interest are well served, Urquhart, Dunrobin, Cawdor, and Brodie Castles are all within easy reach as are Culloden battle-field and Fort George
Home Farms central location makes an ideal base for touring the highlands. The scenic west coast and the Cairngorms National Park are both less than two hours distant making them both popular destinations for day trips.
The Scottish Highlands are world famous for their natural beauty and our whole area abounds with lochs, glens, mountains and rivers. Glen Affric, Glen Strathfarrar, Strathglass and Strathconon are all well worth visiting.
The nearby River Blackwater hosts the spectacular Rogie Falls only 15 mins drive from Home Farm. The falls provide an opportunity to observe leaping salmon whilst the surrounding woodlands offer the chance of peaceful excursions.
Another "must visit" for virtually everyone who comes to this area is Loch Ness, probably the most famous of all Scottish lochs .Whether you wish to look for Nessie, visit Urquhart Castle, or cruise the loch, there is
plenty here for everyone.
Whisky distilleries are always popular with visitors, and here in Muir of Ord we have our very own! The Glen Ord Distillery is open to visitors - do go and have a look and sample some "uisge-beatha" - the water of life! A little further afield is the Glenmorangie Distillery at Tain,
